Nearly all serious Cypraeidae collectors are familiar with the legendary Bouchetaria aenigma. Owing to its unique form, aenigma has been placed in its own genus, Bouchetaria. It has a relatively wide deep-sea distribution in the Mozambique Channel, ranging from the northern coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa, to the northern tip of Madagascar and the Glorioso Islands. There are only between 10-20 of the specimens known to have been found, making it one of the most coveted Cypraeidae species of all.

Several shell dealers in the past have been known to try to pass off specimens of various similar-looking species as B. aenigma. Several years ago, I purchased the below very worn "Bouchetaria aenigma" specimen from a reputable shell dealer located in China. It’s been a centerpiece of my collection for some time, but lately I’ve started to question its identification. Unfortunately, I lack the resources to verify its validity.
It's time for this specimen to find a new home, as I'm letting go of my collection. If you're interested in purchasing it, whether for study or collection, reach out and let me (Dakota) know! You can either contact me through the site, or email me at worldshellsusa@outlook.com.
I wanted to list it on the site with all the rest of our available specimens, but for honesty's sake, I wanted to be clear that I have been unconvinced of the identification as of late.
The details on the shell are:
